Clinical Observation of Bronchiectasis


Abstract
Clinical observation was done on cases of bronchiectasis which were confirmed by bronchography during the period from Jan. 1974 to Dec. 1979 at Seoul University Hospital. The results were summarized as follows:
1) There were 44 males and 40 females, Bronchiectasis was seen most frequently between the age group of 20-39 years age.
2) The main clinical symptoms were sputum (92.9%), cough (86. 9%), bloody sputum (52.4%) and hemoptysis (42.6%).
3) Broachogaphic examination showed the cylindrical type in 39.3%, the cystic type in 28.6%, the varicose type in 6.0% and the mixed type in 17.8%.
4) The bronchiectatic lesion was seen in the left lung in 60.7%, in the right lung in 22.6% and in the both lung in 16.7%. The involed lobe was the upper division of the upper lobe of the left lung in 11.9%, the lingular segment of the left upper lobe in 38. 1%, the lower lobe of the left lung in 60.7%, the upper lobe of the right lung in 15.5%, the middle lobe in 21.4% and the lower lobe of the right lung in 25.0%. The lower lobe of the left lung was most frequently involved.
5) Simple chest X-ray examination showed the linear and patchy densities in 42.8%, the cystic ectasis in 21.4%, the lesions of pulmonary tuberculosis in 27.4%, bronchopneumonia in 21.4% and the normal findings in 7. 1%. The bronchiectasis was suspected in 39 cases (46.4%) by simple chest X-ray examination.
6) 20 cases of patients had the past history of pulmonary tuberculosis and 12 cases had the active tuberculous lesions.
